Natural Stone Retaining Walls

Dry-stacked and mortared stone walls built from local fieldstone, limestone and boulders with lasting character.

What it is

The details, in plain English.

Stone walls are part of Tennessee's landscape. Dry-stacked fieldstone, cut limestone and large boulders hold a hillside and look like they grew there. Each wall is fit by hand, with the biggest stones low and the best faces forward.

Behind the beauty is engineering: a solid base, batter into the slope, drainage stone and proper tie-through stones. We build to last and to age gracefully, with plantings tucked into the crevices.

Good questions

Questions, answered

Is a dry-stacked wall strong enough?

A properly built dry-stack wall is very strong because weight and friction hold it. Height, slope and loads decide whether mortar or engineering is needed.

Can I plant in the wall?

Yes. Plants tucked into crevices soften a stone wall and help it feel natural.
